The mission of the Asian American Business Alliance of Greater Philadelphia (AABAGP), a 501c3 nonprofit, is economic, educational and charitable. This is important because most Asian American businesses were created by immigrants out of necessity and not design. As a result, there is a large knowledge gap and a lack of resources to close that gap. In addition, most of these business owners do not have health insurance or a retirement plan, making them susceptible to serious problems that can be prevented.
Many AAPI business owners do not speak English well and don’t understand the details of the laws and regulations that govern their business operations. They are not aware of opportunities to improve or grow their businesses nor do they know how to apply or qualify for these programs
or contracts. In addition, many applications, training programs and qualifying processes require
fluency in English. AABAGP will address those needs as a nonprofit business organization inclusive of all Asian Pacific American business owners and business professionals.
Asian Americans are a very diverse category of people and require particular attention to the different cultures, customs, religions, languages, geographic areas and past experiences. Asian Americans make up about 7% of the US population and represent people who are not classified as White, Black, Latino or Native American. Many of the remaining 60% of the world’s population find themselves categorized as Asian Pacific American when they arrive in the US or when their children are born in the US.
One thing they have in common is business and the problems they experience starting, operating, growing and passing on their businesses. Our business nonprofit addresses these needs and problems through educational programs, technical training and support, networking, vending opportunities, financial literacy, charitable giving, scholarships for children, community building and by countering prejudice and discrimination.
In summary, our Asian American business nonprofit will do the following things in multiple
languages:
1. Educational: instruction for developing and improving business capabilities, instruction on
business compliance and civic responsibility, instruction on subjects useful to the individual
and beneficial to the community they live in. We will use in-person and online public
forums, seminars, lectures, panel discussion, individual assistance, newsletters, and course
of instruction. We will use social media, radio, podcast and our own website.
2. Charitable: benevolent giving, grant-making, support for victims of crime and those in need,
reduce neighborhood tensions, build community bridges and create inter-group harmony,
defend civil rights, eliminate prejudice and discrimination.
We offer high level networking events and technical seminars where you can meet decision makers, Industry experts and get the facts straight from them, learn what resources are available to your business and ascertain if the opportunity is right for you. We connect you with people who purchase, partner, supply and finance. As a AABAGP member, you are not alone.
